Concert for Peace and Justice- Bruckner & Kortekaas

  • Date: 18 November 20:00 - 22:00
  • Location: Kloosterkerk

In 2022, the Residentie Bachkoor celebrates its 150th birthday. This fall, the choir will sing not only the Mass in E minor written by Anton Bruckner for eight-part choir, wind and brass, but also a new work from Bram Kortekaas that he has composed on behalf of the choir.

Kortekaas’ contemporary piece is a musical reaction to the mass of Bruckner for which he chose the text of the pacifist pamphlet Dulce bellum inexpertis, written by the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus. A secular text in Latin against war which fits perfectly with The Hague, city of peace and justice. In it, Erasmus outlines what he sees as the fallacious ideas about war in his time and contrasts them with his own pacifist, gospel-based theories. “Everyone who knows what war is, has an abhorrence of it. There is nothing worse and nothing that should be avoided more. War is inhuman and unchristian,” he argues. The text was chosen before the war in Ukraine started. This conflict makes Erasmus’ text on the miseries of war even more meaningful and relevant.
