Eternal Spring

  • Date: 08 February
  • Location: Filmhuis The Hague

In March of 2002, a state television station in China was hacked by members of the outlawed spiritual group Falun Gong, with the aim of refuting government charges. Falun Gong strives for the refinement of the body and soul, in which honesty, compassion, and tolerance are key values. In the aftermath of the hijacking the town of Changchun, hometown of the founder of Falun Gong, was tested by a stream of police attacks. Member of Falun Gong and cartoonist Daxiong was forced to flee.

He arrived in North America and assigned blame to the hijackers for exacerbating violent oppression. But, his views are challenged when he meets the sole surviving participant who escaped China and fled to Seoul, South Korea. Inspired by Daxiong’s art, “Eternal Spring” combines live-action with 3D animation in an impressive story of resistance, with harrowing eyewitness accounts and determination to stand up for political and religious freedoms — regardless of the price to be paid.

“Animated documentary about doomed resistance to the Chinese authorities.” ★★★★ - NRC
